Magdalen Bridge could be reopened for future May Day celebrations, according to police chiefs, writes Andrew Ffrench.

Oxford's area commander Supt Cressida Dick made the pledge after Saturday's event, in which 11,000 enjoyed the last May morning of the 20th century.

Several people tried to run on to Magdalen Bridge, but were stopped by police and University stewards.

One person was arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour, but there were no casualties. Immediately after the May Day event, officers swooped on an illegal rave in Brasenose Wood, off the Eastern Bypass, and seized the sound system from 300 revellers. Two people were arrested.

Supt Dick, in charge of 100 officers policing the May Day event, said the peaceful celebration was conducted in "a very relaxed mood".

Fears of a crush led to the bridge being sealed off from 4am to 7am for the second year running.

Supt Dick added the question of whether the bridge should remain closed in future would be reviewed by all the relevant authorities. They would consider issues including strengthening the bridge and access for the emergency services. Supt Dick said it would be "extremely hazardous" to allow people on to the bridge in its current state.

She added: "With a great deal of planning from all agencies, we could have an event with the bridge open in the future."

This year the city council called for the bridge to be kept open but the county council closed it after Thames Valley Police threatened a judicial review.

Supt Dick said the disagreement was "unfortunate". "The indecision meant that the event was difficult to plan but these negotiations should ensure that next year's event goes smoothly," she said.
