Students and staff at an Oxford college are on alert after threats of violence and vandalism, writes Paul Harris.
The terror campaign forced the temporary closure of Worcester College's library for security reasons after a series of hate e-mails to students.
Jamie Corner, president of the students' Junior Common Room, said: "There have been threats against the college and against individuals, although we are not exact about their extent. There is no clear motive. The college has made sure student life has not been affected, but the library was closed for one night." He added: "The likelihood is we are looking at some sort of student prank, but the college has to take a responsible line and make sure it is nothing more serious."
The library was closed because of fears that it could be damaged. So far, no actual vandalism has been reported.
College dean Dr Stephen Williams said: "The matter has been placed in the hands of the police and we are taking their advice on the security of staff and students."
A police spokesman said: "We are treating the matter very seriously and will investigate further."
