Oxford University today abandoned plans to put up 93 40ft high masts at Wytham Woods to track wildlife.
The proposal caused outrage among villagers who claimed that the picturesque area around the village on the western fringe of Oxford would be disfigured.
The University has withdrawn its planning application to the Vale of White Horse District Council. Prof Chris Perrins, director of the University's Edward Grey Institute of Field Ornithology, said: "Our plan to track animals and birds around Wytham is designed to collect valuable ecological data.
However, we are sensitive to issues that have been raised about the proposed network of radio masts and so have withdrawn our planning application."
