MITSUBISHI has signed another deal to market its new lean, green petrol engines to another car maker.
The Japanese car maker has agreed to supply Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) technology to Korean car makers Hyundai to power its new Equus model with a new 4.5-litre GDI V8 engine.
Its GDI engines are already being used in Volvo and Peugeot models, as well as Mitsubishi cars.
Sales of the GDI engine have now passed the 500,000 unit milestone with a quarter of these produced in Europe. The company currently uses its GDI engine family to power 11 models in Japan, four models in Europe. The new engine now brings the line-up to six including 1.5-litre, 1.8-litre, 2.4-litre, 3.0-litre, 3.5-litre and 4.5-litre versions.
Introduced in August 1996, Mitsubishi became the first car maker to use GDI engine technology in a production model, to give performance which results in lower emissions, higher fuel consumption and higher power outputs than conventional multi-port injection engines. Mitsubishi believes that the GDI engine will become a leading power source for passenger cars from the beginning of the 21st century, and is working to increase production and promote its use worldwide.
