Oxford United seem certain to agree to Martin Gray's request to go on the transfer list.
Director Maurice Evans said he felt it would not be right for the club to stand in the midfielder's way when he had genuine personal reasons for needing to return north.
The 27-year-old former Sunderland player has recently become a father and is now desperate to return to the Wearside area to be nearer relatives.
"Martin wants to go purely and simply because of his family," Evans said. "From what I understand, he would be prepared even to drop down into non-League.
"It's got to be put to a board meeting, but I shall certainly do my best to persuade the other directors to allow him to go. When there are personal problems, you have to be sympathetic."
Evans acknowledged that finding a replacement for such a hard-working ball-winner would not be easy.
"He's been an excellent pro, always giving everything he's got. It will be a shame to lose him," he said.
Meanwhile, young striker Simon Weatherstone looks set to agree to the two-year contract he has been offered by Oxford United.
"There has been interest in him from another club, but I expect he will sign for Oxford," said a friend.
