A PIONEERING car club which aims to cut pollution and congestion in Oxford could be launched next year.
Members pay a yearly membership fee to use one of the specially-allocated cars, paying according to mileage and how long they use it for.
The scheme, being discussed today by the city's highways and traffic committee, would be the first in England, though it is well established in mainland Europe.
Rental firm Avis, which is behind the idea, said evidence from other European cities suggests each car club car would replace five cars currently on the road in Oxford.
Randal Tarn, director of fleet and operations for Avis, said: "Oxford City Council has undertaken a number of well-received transport policy initiatives and this scheme adds an extra dimension to their integrated transport solution."
Initially the firm plans to have six cars available in Jericho, Walton Manor and Norham Road areas and might expand the scheme if it proved successful.
City principal planner Peter Mann said: "We recognise that the car has an important role to play in the daily lives of Oxford residents."
He hoped the club would appeal to those who don't have a car, as well as those who might otherwise need a second family vehicle.
Highways committee chairman Alex Hollingsworth said the scheme was an opportunity to further the city's transport policy.
He said: "Car clubs are a cost-effective way to give people access to cars when they need them and they assist in the reduction of both congestion and pollution."
