A football fan, who defended himself after being ambushed by at least ten Oxford United fans, has been cleared of violence charges.
Swindon supporter Peter Drury told Oxford Crown Court yesterday a gang of Oxford fans started a fight just before the end of a derby match between Oxford and Swindon at the Manor Ground on February 13 this year.
Mr Drury, 34, of Toothill, Swindon, said he had left the match, which Oxford won, about ten minutes before the end to avoid any trouble. But as he was walking in Cuckoo Lane, he said a group of Oxford United hooligans came through a gate into the alleyway looking for trouble.
Mr Drury said one man came straight at him and he was forced to punch out to keep him away.
Mr Drury said: "There was a lot of shouting and things being thrown. The Oxford supporters started the violence. I was as frightened as anyone else. I did not hit anyone. I strongly believe I defended myself after they had jumped us." Mr Drury was cleared of affray and also an alternative lesser charge of causing fear or provocation of violence, both of which he had denied.
Nicholas Syfret, prosecuting, conceded Mr Drury had not started the fight but argued that he had taken an active part in it.
Seven other Swindon supporters had previously pleaded guilty to their part in the fight.
