Hero antique dealer Luciano Pistone saved an 86-year-old friend from handing over £900 to bogus builders.

And he has warned other vulnerable people to be on their guard against the conmen.

The 61-year-old, who runs a shop in South Parade, Oxford, came to the rescue after spotting his elderly friend, who did not want to be identified, near her home in Middle Way.

He said: "She was very distressed and when I asked why, she said she was on her way to the bank to pay two builders who told her she needed her roof mending. "She was going to draw out £900 for them. I knew there was nothing wrong with her roof and took her back to her house. I have no doubt she would have handed these people money and then would never have seen them again. I think it is terrible that they should pick on frail, vulnerable people like this."

Police were called but the conmen - who arranged to meet the pensioner at the NatWest Bank in Banbury Road - had left.

Mr Pistone said: "I am a Rotarian and our motto is Service Above Self. I'm just glad I intervened. "I have no doubt these conmen look out for elderly, vulnerable people. If we can get a message across for them to call the police if they are suspicious, and it helps save even just one person, then that would be wonderful."

A police spokesman said: "We cannot stress enough how important it is for members of the public, especially pensioners, who are approached by workmen to seek the help of a friend to make sure a proper contract is struck."

He said they would investigate the latest case.
