A cobbled cycle route is proving a danger to cyclists, councillors claim.

The lane near Oxford Railway Station was formed under the Oxford Transport Strategy scheme.

But cyclists have complained about the route and some have said the cobbles are making them lose balance as they are passed by buses.

Liberal Democrats visited the site to test the cobbled cycle lane for themselves.

Now Oxford City councillors Jean Fooks and John Goddard and Oxfordshire County councillor Tim Horton are to press for the lane to be resurfaced. Cllr Fooks said: "I've had many complaints from cyclists who use this route and they feel it is a danger and very uncomfortable.

"We will be recommending the area is smoothed out. There is also ample room for an alternative cycle route on the pavement, which is very wide.

"There are a number of points which still need to be looked at in the station junction area.

"Cyclists coming into the city under the railway bridge still have no lane and feel unsafe."

Cllr Horton, the Liberal Democrat highways spokesman, added: "It's a real bone-shaker of a route and totally wrong for cyclists. "The cobbles were not a good idea and we are now saying it is time we lift them up and let them go. The cyclist needs a better deal."

A county council spokesman said: "We were well aware that people had complained about this cobbled area and we are looking at a solution."

The councillors' findings will be reported the OTS review committee in the New Year.
