Unsung heroes Harold and Gladys Boyce have had their selfless years of volunteer work rewarded.
The couple, of Lashfield Lane, Dry Sandford, near Abingdon, have won the Oxfordshire Local Hero Award 1999 for their services to the community. Last night, at the Belfry Hotel, Milton Common, they were recognised for their efforts by the Oxford Mail and Fox FM.
Mr Boyce said: "I am absolutely surprised beyond anything I have dreamed of before. I am a bit embarrassed and I feel overwhelmed. I don't feel it has sunk in. I have a very close family and I could not have done this without their support."
Mrs Boyce said: "I am very, very surprised and overwhelmed with it all. I have never won anything like this before." Mr Boyce, 83, is a lifelong member of the Salvation Army and for the past 35 years he and his 82-year-old wife have prepared Christmas dinners for those who are lonely.
For 50 years, Mr Boyce conducted a service in Oxford Prison on Christmas morning and for the past 16 years he has been the leader of the Over Sixties Club at the Salvation Army.
The couple, who were nominated by their children, celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this year.
Local Heroes was founded by the Oxford Mail and Fox FM to honour people who selflessly help others, and to thank people who make the world a better place.
