A derelict town-centre eyesore could be redeveloped as part of a multi-million-pound housing project, writes Tim Hughes.

The former Lamb Garage in Wallingford has fallen into disrepair since it closed more than 20 years ago. But the Castle Street site, at the heart of the town's conservation area, is set to be transformed into new homes.

The site consists of a rough area of car parking and a crumbling garage workshop. It is the property of Grace Hotels, which owns the neighbouring George Hotel.

Though no detailed plans have been revealed, the company hopes to build nine semi-detached properties at a total cost of about £2.5m. Robert Peel, acting managing director of Grace Hotels, said work would start as soon as possible. He said: "I hope we can find a scheme that is acceptable to Wallingford.

"We can develop the site without delay if that is what the town wants. It could turn an ugly area into something beautiful."

The scheme has been welcomed by Wallingford Town Council. Deputy mayor Betty Atkins said redevelopment was long-overdue.

She said: "The site is in a terrible state. It is a lovely area of the town, but that corner is grim. Redevelopment will improve the area tremendously and I welcome it." The site has been earmarked by South Oxfordshire District Council as a potential housing area, but because it adjoins the listed George Hotel and Lamb Arcade it would be subject to strict planning controls.

Councillor Pat Granados said: "We need housing. Young people cannot afford to stay in Wallingford and they move to Didcot because it is cheaper."
