Time is about to be called at a village pub - so that flats and houses may be built on the site.

The Punch Pub Company has teamed up with developer Berkeley Homes to replace the Scholar Gypsy pub in Kennington with 14 four-bedroom apartments and four three-bed terrace houses. The move would leave the 4,000-population village with only one pub - The Tandem.

Vale of White Horse District Council planners are considering the application. Villagers have until June 15 to put forward their views. The company is trying to convince planners that the building is no longer viable as a pub. Kennington Parish Council meets tonight (June 8) o decide on its response. Parish clerk George Ross said: "It used to be a popular pub, but many managers have come and gone.

"The building has been neglected over the years. Many will see this as a good move, but regular drinkers at The Scholar will be upset. The pub serves a purpose here, but it is very run-down."
