The Prince of Wales got in some exercise when he went walkabout on Burford's steep High Street during a visit to the town.

More than 1,000 people turned out in glorious sunshine to welcome the Prince on Saturday and see him unveil the town's new Burford Lion Millennium plaque, carved into the 16th century Falkland Hall building.

Many of the large crowd who greeted the Prince were waving flags and carrying placards welcoming him,.

Prince Charles told the crowd: "It's great to be here. I'm glad it is such a lovely evening for all of you. Burford is a wonderful place.

"It's a great place to keep fit with this wonderful hill. There is a great deal to feel proud of here.

His Royal Highness was welcomed by Hugo Brunner, the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, who introduced the Prince to a string of dignitaries, including town mayor Keith Davies. Cllr Davies later said: "This was definitely the greatest occasion for the town in the last 100 years."

The Prince unveiled the plaque to warm applause.

He said: "I hope this carving will last for another 1,000 years when, you never know, one of my descendants might come and unveil another one."

Stefanie Wallis, 13, from nearby Taynton, who shook hands with the Prince, said it was a "real thrill".

She said: "This is one of the best moments in my life.
