Graduates from Oxford University are earning thousands of pounds more than other college leavers.

A survey shows that the average starting salary for an Oxford graduate this summer will be 19,800.

That is more than 2,000 above the average salary graduates leaving other leading universities can expect. The survey, compiled by graduate recruitment company High Fliers, shows that Oxford graduates can expect to be about 4,000 better off than those leaving York, Sheffield and Glasgow and almost 3,000 richer than graduates of Birmingham and Manchester.

The gap continues to widen after five years in work. Oxford graduates can then earn an average of 38,000, with much lower figures of 28,000 for Cardiff graduates and 30,100 for those from Leeds. In a visit to Oxford, shadow Education Secretary Teresa May defended Oxford University's admissions policy.

She said: "The Government's attack on Oxford University has been characterised by ill-judged and ill-informed opinion."
