The Domino's Oxford Saints lost their unbeaten British Senior League Division 2 record at the hands of long-time rivals the Personal Assurance Knights at Oxford RFC on Saturday.
Saints could only manage a couple of field goals from Steve Belcher, going down 26-6 as the Knights, from Farnham in Surrey, recorded their fifth win of the season to go clear at the top of the table.
The home side began badly by fumbling the ball which allowed the Knights to take an early 3-0 lead through a Watkinson field goal. However, Belcher levelled the scores with his first field goal from 33 yards after an interception by cornerback Henry Johnson. In the second period, Knights quarterback Adam Heirons threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Jon Williams, and Watkinson added the extra point to make the score 10-3.
The second half was one-way traffic as the Knights steadily pulled clear to 19-3 up at the start of the last quarter.
Oxford put together a decent drive but could only record a 37-yard field goal from Belcher and Knights wrapped it up with another touchdown. Watkinson's kick completed the scoring.
