Joey Beauchamp is set to re-sign for Oxford United today providing they offer him at least a two-year deal.
Chairman Firoz Kassam has insisted that all of the club's out-of-contract players be offered only one-year deals until he knows the result of the July 17 judicial review into the multiplex cinema.
But Beauchamp, who is reported to have been offered 1,000 a week more by Reading, has been holding out for improved terms from United.
And it's believed they will move some way towards his demands to keep a player who has already made the club 925,000 from previous moves. He left, against his wishes, to join West Ham for 1m in 1994 and was bought back from Swindon Town 16 months later by Denis Smith for just 75,000.
Smith was in talks with the 29-year-old midfielder yesterday and Beauchamp will be back at the Manor Ground today before jetting out for a holiday in Cyprus.
Smith said: "I'm hoping he signs. I'm pretty certain he will, but until he actually does, I won't believe it. "We've talked a lot and I'm hoping he now comes in to sign."
Beauchamp, however, was being more cautious.
"If things are sorted out the way I want them, then there's a possibility I will sign," he said. "But I'm still trying to sort them out, so I can't say more than that."
Reading are believed to have dropped out of the race for his signature with Royals manager Alan Pardew admitting that he doesn't now expect Beauchamp to join them.
But while Smith may get Beauchamp to stay, young players Jamie Cook and Rob Folland have turned down their one-year deals from the club.
"They've both said 'no'," Smith added. "Cooky says he'll sign if we give him what he wants and I can understand players wanting more money, but it's all I can offer them."
