Dave Hunt was Frilford Heath's highest-placed finisher at the club's prestigious Gold Medal, writes Richard Tilley.

The two-round strokeplay event is one of the big dates on the south of England amateur circuit, with past winners including former European Tour professionals Carl Mason and Warren Humphreys.

While this year's competition clashed with the British Amateur Championship, it was nevertheless a strong field which took on Frilford's Red and Green courses.

Hunt was in contention for the title after a two-over-par round of 71 on the Green course in the morning. But his chances of victory disappeared when he dropped seven shots on the testing front nine of the Red course in the afternoon.

A storming finish, however, saw him come back in three under to post a four-over-par 77.

His total of 148 was good enough to give him fifth place on countback from three other players, one of whom was Frilford clubmate Matt Briggs.

Briggs shot 78 on the Red course in the morning and followed this with a 70 in the afternoon. Frilford's Ben Miles posted the lowest round on the Green course a one-under 68.

The event was won by Sonning's Simon Maynard from Mark Housego, of Wycombe Heights.

The pair finished tied on 145, but Maynard came out on top in a four-hole play-off over the first, 16th, 17th and 18th holes on the Green course.
