Little Leigh Jeffries could not walk for 24 hours after having the same meningitis jab which has caused alarming side effects across the UK.

The 16-month-old's relatives were terrified by his ordeal, which lasted for six weeks after he had the injection.

And his grandmother Sandra Keet, of St Andrews Close, Abingdon, who looks after the tot for her schoolgirl daughter Kerry, 16, says nobody warned the family about possible side effects.

Leigh's adverse reaction to the vaccination happened just hours after it was administered in March. Mrs Keet said: "I panicked because he couldn't even stand up. Even while I held him up he couldn't stabilise himself. For the next few weeks he was constantly wobbly on his feet - like he was dizzy - and was being sick.

"After six weeks he became so exhausted he even had a skin rash all over his face. But the doctors just kept telling us to give him Calpol."

Earlier this week it was revealed that 5,000 youngsters across the UK had been affected by Chiron, one of two brands being used to combat Meningitis C.

Oxfordshire Health Authority, which has vaccinated 40,000 school pupils, said it was not aware of anyone in the county suffering from life-threatening side effects
