Daimlerchrysler UK has announced that the little Smart car will be sold officially in Britain from October, writes David Duffy.

It means that, for the first time, Smart customers in the UK will have the benefit of a full sales, service, parts and customer support operation for the two-seater city car, which has been on sale in mainland Europe since October 1998.

The Smart will initially be available in Britain in left-hand drive, following the car's official debut at the British International Motor Show. Right-hand drive models will be launched in 2002.

The car is built by Micro Compact Car GmbH, part of DaimlerChrysler which also builds Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler and Jeep models.

Walter Scherg has been appointed general manager for Smart from July 1 and will be based at Milton Keynes.

He said: "Smart is an exciting and innovative concept. It combines comfort, safety, practicality and leading edge style in an ultra-small package. It's a car that establishes new trends and will attract new customers.

Further details of the location of sales and service outlets will be announced shortly. Prices for the UK will be announced nearer to the launch date.

A freephone number for Smart enquiries is 0800 037 9966 or customers can register their interest on a website at www.theSmart.co.uk.
