Football supporters from Oxfordshire were among hundreds of England fans arrested by Dutch and Belgian police.

A spokesman for the National Criminal Intelligence Service, which co-ordinates information on football hooligans, said 921 fans were arrested, including about 11 from Oxfordshire.

"They gave addresses in places like Oxford, Abingdon, Didcot and Bicester," said the spokesman.

But because some may have given false names and addresses, he said it was impossible to say with certainty where they came from. Those arrested during the Euro 2000 championships were either deported or are being held by police in Belgium pending trial.

The NCIS said it faced a complex task identifying all those involved and notifying local police forces across Britain, including Thames Valley.

Those who were deported have arrived back at Manchester and Stansted airports, where immigration officers took details and photographs. The latest figures from the NCIS show 393 of the English fans arrested have criminal records, including 25 known to the NCIS for football-related crime. None of the fans were the subject of international banning orders.

Dutch and Belgian police have deported 474 English fans.

Thames Valley Police spokesman Paul Anthem said: "At present this matter is being dealt with by the National Criminal Intelligence Service. If we are asked to become involved we will do so."
