Vauxhall's new mini people carrier the agile Agila boasts some of the lowest running costs of any car, according to the car-maker, writes David Duffy.
With on-the-road prices starting below 7,000 for the Agila 1.0-litre 12-valve model and 7,450 for the 1.2-litre 16-valve version, both rapidly become among the most competitive cars on the market to run and own, says Vauxhall.
Insurance groupings are also at the foot of the scale, now confirmed as Group 2E for the Agila 1.0 12v, and Group 3E for the Agila 1.2 16v.
Richard Hughes, the Agila's product manager at Vauxhall, said: "These insurance groups are testament to the class-leading security and safety features integral to Agila's design.
"When combined with very competitive on-the-road prices and low maintenance costs, the Agila is one of today's most economical cars to buy and own."
The Agila comes in one trim with a high level of specification as standard, offered on both the 1.0-litre 12-valve, or 1.2-litre 16-valve engines.
Coloured bumpers and wing mirrors add to the stylish exterior look, as well as full-size wheel trims. All models have tinted glass. Inside the Agila has electric power steering and driver's airbag, electric mirrors and Vauxhall's Triple Information Display.
The 75 horsepower 1.2-litre 16v model also features a tachometer as standard.
Rear passengers have the comfort of head restraints and the rear seat can be split and folded flat for extra versatility in loading.
In-car entertainment is provided by Vauxhall's CAR 300 radio/cassette audio system, which uses four loud speakers and has a remote read-out. A radio/compact disc player is available as an option.
Standard safety and security features of the Agila include a full-size driver's airbag and three-point seatbelts on all four seats.
Two option packs, a Styling Pack and a Comfort Pack, are available. The Styling Pack adds alloy wheels, front fog lamps and black B-pillars. The Comfort Pack adds electric front windows and central locking.
A manual sunroof, passenger airbag, electronic anti-lock brakes and roof-rails can also be specified as individual options. Air conditioning is available with the 1.2 16v engine only.
For security, a Thatcham-approved electronic engine immobiliser and free-wheeling door locks are standard, with central deadlocking available as an option.
A wide range of accessories is being marketed for the car. Exterior equipment includes mudflaps and headlamp protectors, and for customers wanting to give their car that individual touch, there is a range of Vauxhall i-Line body styling parts including front lower spoiler, roof spoiler, exhaust sleeve, radiator grille insert, alloy wheels, and interior door sill covers.
Custom-made interior accessories include an alloy-look steering wheel, gear lever surround, heater/ventilation panel and door handle inserts. Interior protection can also be enhanced with a tailored boot liner or carpet or rubber mat sets. Anti-theft equipment includes a vehicle tracking system or the visible deterrent of a steering wheel security bar.
Safety accessories include a range of child safety seats, booster cushions and cradles, first aid kit, warning triangle, fire extinguisher and spare bulb kits.
Versatility is the key to towing and touring accessories for the new Agila. These include a fully flexible roof carrier that can be adapted to carry everything from a boat to more conventional luggage items, tow bar and electrics, tow rope, fuel cans and load compartment covers.
