Tim Henman revealed after his first-round win over Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan last night how he was doubly determined not to give British tennis fans another let-down following Greg Rusedski's early exit from the Championships, writes Jon Murray at Wimbledon.
Henman, seeded eight, fought back after losing the first set to beat the Thai 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 in just under two and a half hours.
"If anything, I had to try and learn a little bit from Greg going out," Henman said. "He had a rough time out there. My initial reaction was that I had to try and avoid putting myself in the same situation." However, Weston-on-the-Green's most famous son didn't believe there was any added pressure on him because Rusedski was out.
"I think I've probably got enough pressure on myself at the moment," he said.
Henman can now look forward to an unexpected second-round meeting with Arnauld Clement on Thursday after the Frenchman beat big-serving Goran Ivanisevic 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
