Andrew Barnett went close to breaking the Burford amateur course record when shooting a gross 69 in the club's President's Cup.
But for recording a three-over-par eight at the 12th hole, Barnett could have beaten the old mark which stands at 67.
Barnett, whose handicap will now be cut from six to five, won the cup - part of the club's Millennium Week celebrations - with 45 stableford points. Roland Watkins won Carswell's club championship by 14 strokes - a Tiger Woods-like margin.
The South African six-handicapper shot rounds of 75 and 77 for a total of 152 to finish well clear of runner-up Lee Stopps.
