Hundreds of people lined the streets of Oxford to watch the annual University procession to the Encaenia ceremeony at the Sheldonian Theatre, writes Patrick Fleming.
Star of stage and screen Dame Judi Dench was the centre of attraction at the ceremony.
She strolled through the sunlit city to receive her honorary Doctor of Letters degree in the historic ceremony, presided over by University Chancellor Lord Jenkins of Hillhead. Personalities from all walks of life were present to see honorary degrees given to Helen Bamber, OBE, Sir Howard Hidgkin, CBE, the Viscount Runciman CBE, Prof Quentin Skinner, Prof Sir Martin Rees and Prof Janet Rowley.
The annual event, which is a festival of dedication to the work and achievements of the University, is conducted mainly in Latin and has been held at the Sheldonian since it was completed in 1669.
Guests moved on to Rhodes House for lunch, followed by a garden party in the grounds of New College.
