Oxford United manager Denis Smith is now looking for a new goalkeeper after Andre Arendse informed him that he was staying in South Africa.
Arendse had a clause in his contract entitling him to a free transfer at the end of the season if the move to Oxford did not work out.
After starting last season as United's No 1, Arendse became increasingly frustrated as he spent most of the season sat on the bench.
His last game for United was in the 3-1 defeat against Reading at the Manor where he had to come off midway through the first half with a shoulder injury.
He clearly does not want to stay on the bench as cover for new signing Richard Knight, so has decided to use the clause in his contract and return to South Africa.
