Internationally acclaimed musicians are coming together this week to take part in Oxford's first Chamber Music festival. The festival has been devised by the very talented Oxford violinist Priya Mitchell, who has assembled some of the finest names in chamber music, including Steven Isserlis, Natalie Clein, Imogen Cooper, Anthony Pay and Melvyn Tan.
The music of the festival encompasses a wide range of styles and combinations, from solo sonatas and songs, to works combining wind and string instruments. Naturally Priya Mitchell will also be playing in most of the concerts too, the first of which takes place at St Antony's College tonight at 8pm with a programme of works by Beethoven, Webern and Brahms dedicated to Michael Aris. A lunchtime concert of works by Dohnanyi and Mozart takes place in the Jacqueline du Pr Music Building on Wednesday, which is followed by a talk about the perception of music by psychologist Dr Anthony Storr in the evening. The penultimate concert, at 11pm in the Holywell Music Room, is an accordion recital of Russian and Argentinian folk music. The final concert at the Sheldonian Theatre on July 8 will be a celebratory performance of Mendelssohn's exuberant Octet for Strings.
