Jobless figures in Oxford East are dropping dramatically, MP Andrew Smith said.

Mr Smith, the First Secretary to the Treasury, released figures showing unemployment in his constituency had fallen by 41.6 per cent in the three years of the Labour Government, dropping from 2,575 to 1,503.

Equivalent figures for young long-term unemployed showed a 70.6 per cent drop.

Mr Smith said: "This is fantastic news and proof that sound management of the economy and strong policies to move people off welfare and into work are really making an impact."

But the country's biggest trade union, GMB, is demanding Government action about the fall in manufacturing jobs nationwide.
