Although billed as a magnificent sporting occasion by the top three finishers in the Polish Grand Prix, I doubt if Oxford's Todd Wiltshire and Jimmy Nilsen would agree.
Everything was in place for another nail-biter and with a record 30,000 crowd for a GP event inside, the stage was set. Unfortunately for the Oxford pair, they failed to fire.
We all knew that a half-fit Nilsen was only there for the ride, because that's all he had to do. It came as no surprise when he was ruled out of Oxford's hectic schedule of away meetings this week, and I still can't understand how he was passed fit to race in the GP. Meanwhile, Wiltshire knew the pressure would be on him after such a good start in the two opening rounds at Pardubice and Linkopping, and he made every effort to get through.
But somehow, he didn't have the power to go with his good starts, apart from in one race.
He made a useful start in heat 19 a make-or-break heat as the third and fourth would be eliminated and was in front coming out of the second bend.
But then in no time he had a rear view of three exhaust pipes and his chance of a third main final running was in tatters.
Even so, he remains in seventh spot in what is still a very open contest.
