Villagers have given the thumbs down to plans to create one of the largest schools in Europe on their doorstep.
Householders in Grove have condemned proposals put forward by King Alfred's Community and Sports College in Wantage to establish a showpiece school in the village.
Governors have already backed the scheme, which would see the college's three existing Wantage sites closed, and one large American-style campus opened, possibly near Mably Way.
Following the completion of the proposed housing development, the college could have up to 2,500 students.
In a survey conducted by Grove Liberal Democrats, 77 per cent of respondents condemned the plans.
A similar survey has now been launched in Wantage, where a similar result is expected.
Wantage Mayor Jenny Hannaby said: "This must be discussed out in the open. It would be a very sad day if Wantage lost its school. It is a centre of excellence and we love it.
"I don't think schools of 2,500 pupils are good. Grove should have the school it wants and Wantage should develop one of its sites."
