Oxford City's top men's side won a crucial battle against current league leaders Norham Gardens to put themselves firmly back among the title contenders in Men's Division 1 of the Wilson Inter Club League on Saturday.

City stormed into a 3-0 lead after the first round of matches but found themselves still needing to capture one third-round rubber to secure both points after the visitors staged a recovery.

Despite first pair Mark Wallace and Richard Gray losing out to Gardens' first pair of Taco Portegen and Conrad Martinez, final round wins by Eamonn Deeley and Stephen Van Erven, and Geoffery Deeley with Duncan Todd saw them home.

With matches in hand, the outcome of the title is now very much in City's hands.

In Ladies' Division 1, Abingdon enjoyed an 8-1 win at the expense of Oxford Sports B to ease their relegation fears.

Sports' Polly Westell and Suki Good earned their side's only rubber, beating Margaret Mitchell and Paul Tims 6-0, 7-6 in the second round.
