INJURED jockey Scott Taylor will benefit to the tune of around 10,000 as a result of a great night at Oxford Stadium on Tuesday.
It was success all the way as top greyhound trainers we haven't seen at Oxford for ages, turned up with class hounds.
Oxford general manager Mick Hardy reported a threefold increase in the normal Tuesday tote turnover, a full restaurant, very busy bars, a sell-out at the fast-food bars and a turn-out of nearly 1,500 if you add the complement- aries.
Hardy said: "It was a terrific atmosphere and the staff coped admirably. Although they were working, they seemed to enjoy the buzz, and all in all, it was a great night for Oxford."
Bookmakers reported a busy, if not profitable, night. Something in excess of 100,000 was wagered between the bookies and the tote on the 14-race card, and that's an awful lot of dosh in dog racing terms. The Sky cameras, fronted by man-for-all-seasons presenter Jeff Stelling, did a fine job .
Top names from the world of racing Tony McCoy, Mick Fitzgerald and Carl Llewellyn were joined by a host of jockeys including former ace Graham Bradley whose book appears soon, written incidentally by former Oxford Mail racing man Steve Taylor.
Beneficiary Scott Taylor, who watched the action at home, could not have been more impressed with the efforts to boost his fund, which currently stands at 140,000.
The auction, conducted by Luke Harvey, saw unraced puppy Hang On Alice fetch a fantastic 3,000.
Organiser Steve Murphy was delighted with the response.
The only minus on the night was the no-show of several top names from the world of football, with the likes of John Hartson and Dennis Wise failing to make an appearance.
