Oxford's Kelly Caffel appears set to miss out on a trip to Sydney next month, despite coming third in the 1500 metres in the British Olympic trials at Birmingham yesterday.
To achieve her Olympic dream Caffel had not only to finish third but had to run a qualifying time of 4 mins 00.08 secs.
She did the first part behind Hayley Tullett and Helen Pattinson , but her time of 4.15.29 - two seconds outside her personal best - left her well adrift. However, at least she proved her injury problems are a thing of the past.
Banbury 's Perriss Wilkins finished fourth in the discus with 55.97 metres.
Three Olympic medal-winning hopes - Jason Gardener, Jamie Baulch and Iwan Thomas - face an axious 24 hours.
After teenage sensation Mark Lewis-Francis pushed him into fourth place in the 100m, Gardener will be hoping the selectors opt for his experience when they meet to choose the team today.
Sean Baldock's second place to 400m winner Mark Richardson means that third-placed Baulch and Thomas, who missed the trials through injury, are now in direct competition for one spot.
