Labour has chosen Stephen Beer, an investment manager for the Methodist Church, as parliamentary candidate to fight for Tory Robert Jackson's Wantage seat at the next General Election.

Mr Beer, who at 28 will be the constituency's youngest-ever Labour candidate, is single and from London with a flat in the constituency.

Despite Mr Jackson's 6,039 majority at the last election, Mr Beer and the constituency association said they did not regard it as a 'safe' Conservative seat. Mr Beer was selected from a shortlist of four at a meeting of the constituency party in Didcot.

He told the Oxford Mail polls showed the momentum for a Labour Government at the last General Election was continuing and Labour could win the Wantage seat.
