Oxford could become one of the greenest cities in the world following a deal between two organisations dedicated to energy conservation, writes Sarah Parker.
Earthwatch, the Oxford-based organisation that promotes the conservation of renewable energy resources, has signed a deal with Unite, which provides renewable electricity to households and businesses throughout England and Wales.
The deal will bring electricity from renewable resources, including wind and hydro-electric power, to Earthwatch supporters and provide further support for Earthwatch activities.
Dr Robert Barrington, executive director of Earthwatch, said: "We all know that the consumption of energy from traditional sources is a major contributor to global warming.
"Switching to renewable energy sources means that everyone can feel confident that using electricity is not damaging to the environment."
He said the deal between the two organisations could mean that Oxford would become one of the greenest cities in the world, if residents and businesses were to switch to using energy from renewable resources.
Juliet Davenport, director of Unite, added: "The Unite product is sourced from the purest sources including wind and hydro-electric power. It is a straightforward and simple way to reduce the effect of traditional electricity generation on the environment."
