A 19-year-old man was ordered to be detained for three-and-a-half years after admitting robbing a man of his wallet, mobile phone and CD player.

Adam Ryan, of Bath Road, Banbury, approached Gregory Pithers in Broughton Road, Banbury, on May 30, punched him in the face and forced him to hand over his wallet, Oxford Crown Court heard.

Jill Hurworth, prosecuting, said Ryan demanded the personal identification number to the card in the wallet and when he thought Mr Pithers was giving him a false number, grabbed him and tried to frogmarch him to a cashpoint. She said Ryan used Mr Pithers Nokia mobile phone to call a woman, say what he was doing and make Mr Pithers say hello to her.

Mr Pithers struggled free and alerted police, who arrested Ryan a short time afterwards. Mr Pithers suffered a bruise on his head.

Rachel Beckett, defending, said Ryan had been drinking on the night and had now realised the impact of his offence and was deeply remorseful. The court also heard Ryan burgled a bedsit in Gattridge Street, Banbury, between December 31 and January 4, stealing an 800 stereo; took a bottle of Ralph Lauren perfume from Debenhams in Banbury on April 25, and was caught in possession of a four-inch knife and one Ecstasy tablet on April 28.

He was sentenced to three years n a young offenders' institution for the robbery and six months for the burglary.

He was given three one-month sentences, to run concurrently, for the theft and possessing Class A drug and an offensive weapon. Judge Harold Wilson said: "Although you are not yet 20 you are well on your way to spending your life in prison."
