Councils across Oxfordshire are being urged to give health and safety greater priority to cut work-related deaths and injuries, writes David Duffy.
Five people were killed in the South East in 1998/99 and 9,000 injured.
In Oxfordshire there were no deaths in that period and 289 injuries, compared with 305 for the previous year.
Bill Callaghan, chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, said: "I would like to see more local authorities treating health and safety as a priority issue when it comes to allocating resources. Local authorities are the key to turning the tide in favour of the significant improvements necessary to achieve those targets."
