Oxfordshire ace Tim Henman stormed into the second round of the US Open as he demolished Fernando Vicente 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 to avenge his defeat by the Spaniard in this year's French Open.

The No 11 seed, from Weston-on-the-Green, disposed of his tricky opponent in style and put it down to improving consistency on his serve plus his recent victory over 13-times Grand Slam winner Pete Sampras.

I feel happy with my game," said Henman."My best performance here is the fourth round. I want to improve on that.

It's a case of technically playing well, physically being in good shape and mentally being able to concentrate over a two-week period. That's what I'm trying to do.

Henman now plays a qualifier in Fernando Gonzalez and should have few problems progressing to a likely encounter with Richard Krajicek.

Fellow Brit Jamie Delgado was demolished 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 by German Tommy Haas, while Barry Cowan went out to Jens Knippschild 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

All the top seeds progressed, including Sampras and Andre Agassi, plus Venus Williams and Martina Hingis in the women's.
