Radical plans aimed at solving a town's traffic problems are to go under the spotlight this month.
The comprehensive Abingdon Integrated Transport Strategy is nearing the time when the public will be asked to comment on its proposals. The Halcrow Fox consultancy has, since 1997, been working with Oxfordshire County Council, the Vale of White Horse District Council, Abingdon Town Council and South Oxfordshire District Council to draft the plans.
The final scheme will be sent out to homes at the end of the month and will offer residents two possible schemes: two-way traffic in Stratton Way, one-way Stert Street and High Street or the closure of Stert Street to cars, allowing only buses and cyclists and making High Street and Stratton Way two-way.
Other details include a possible 20mph speed limit in the town centre, a new pedestrian crossing at Abingdon Hospital in Marcham Road.
All the elements of the strategy will go on display at the Electric Showroom on West St Helen Street on Friday, September 29 from 10am to 8pm, Saturday, September 30 from 10am to 4pm and Monday, October 2 from 11am to 8pm.
Grant Audley-Miller, section head of Environmental Planning and Conservation at the Vale of White Horse District Council, said: "The leaflet contains a questionnaire and this needs to be returned by November 3. We urge everyone to try to make time to fill this out."
