Farmers welcomed a decision by Oxford councillors to keep the city farmers' market going as a victory for good sense, writes Emma Henry.
Councillors on the civic and property sub-committee agreed to continue the events for another year - but are now looking at holding the market fortnightly, rather than monthly.
Chairman David Penwarden said: "I think a farmers' market adds colour and vitality to the city and it may keep supermarkets on their toes. So this is fantastic news.
"We felt a fortnightly market would give shoppers much more confidence. We're also looking at the possibility of it being slightly larger, so we've asked our officers to look at possible improvements."
He said the popularity of the market was underlined by an elderly lady who arrived at the council chamber just as the market's future had been guaranteed, telling counciillors she'd come to make sure they kept the market open.
