Catholic martyr Thomas More, who attended Magdalen College, Oxford, is to become patron saint of politicians.

On November 5, he will be proposed by the Pope as a "model and intercessor for all those who consider their political commitment as a choice of life".

More, who was beheaded for defying Henry VIII in 1535, was renowned for his principles, learning and capacity for hard work.

He was sent by his patron, Cardinal Morton, to Oxford in 1492. He became Chancellor in 1529 after Thomas Wolsey, a former headmaster of Magdalen College School.

School usher Richard Cairns said: "One of the best ways of judging a school is by its former pupils and Magdalen College School is proud of having shaped the lives of so many outstanding men.
