Wantage MP Robert Jackson has accused opponents of trying to score party-political points over the future of education in the town.
Mr Jackson denied charges by Liberal Democrats that he is "out of touch" after offering to help raise cash for a 'superschool' for the area.
Mr Jackson has launched a 10m appeal to raise money for a showpiece campus for Wantage's King Alfred's Community and Sports College.
But Wantage and Grove Liberal Democrats say the college would be too big, and is against the wishes of parents.
Mr Jackson said: "I don't think it is sensible to play party politics with the future of education in Wantage."
But Neil Fawcett, Oxfordshire county councillor and the Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for Wantage, said: "It is not a party political issue but it is an issue about listening to people."
