In a game they will quickly want to forget, City allowed bottom-of-the-table Leatherhead to pick up their first Ryman Division 1 victory of the season.
City's cause was not helped when they lost Richard Peirson with a cut eyebrow after only 20 minutes, and they played the last half hour with ten men after Adrian Brown was sent off for a professional foul.
Peirson was helped off with blood pouring from an eyebrow after a collision with keeper Vaughan in the 20th minute.
Keeper Alan Foster, who had another excellent game, saved at full length from Beer, while at the other end, Danny Wise twice went close.
Brown got his marching orders in the 61st minute when he held back Harkness. Although referee Field waved play on, on his assistant's intervention he awarded a penalty and showed Brown the red card. Connors fired the home team ahead from the spot.
Another brilliant save by Foster kept out a Papa header but the home team's tails were up, and Harkness twice went close.
City's ten men kept trying but never looked likely to trouble Vaughan.
