City of Oxford continue to lack a cutting edge in the absence of Nick Perks, who has his wrist in plaster, and paid the price for missing chances as they lost 1-0 at home to Hayes in the South League's Middlesex, Berks, Bucks & Oxon regional section.
City dominated large chunks of the game but after keeper Phil Pearson saved a Hayes penalty flick, the visitors grabbed the winner with a shot from an acute angle.
A loss of concentration in the final quarter cost Abingdon as they lost 2-1 at Mill Hill in Area Division 1.
Mill Hill took the lead midway through the first half from their first penalty corner.
Abingdon continued to create chances, but found the Mill Hill goalkeeper in fine form as he pulled off several excellent blocks.
Ten minutes into the second half, Abingdon scored a deserved equaliser at a penalty corner from which Will Trigg sent an unstoppable flick high into the top corner. With ten minutes left, Mill Hill broke down the right to snatch the winner.
David Barber grabbed a hat-trick as Wallingford maintained their excellent start in Division 2 with a 4-1 victory at Farnham Common.
With Guy Hildred and Paul Taylor looking assured at the back, Wallingford took control early on, going 2-0 ahead with goals from short corners by Richard Pool and Barber.
Farnham hit back after the interval, and Rob Hills had to be sharp in the Wallingford goal, before Barber made the game safe with two more strikes on target.
Rover Oxford dominated at home to Chalfont St Peter but paid the price for not converting numerous short corners as the Division 2 new boys forced a 2-2 draw.
Ali Fry opened Rover's account with a terrific snap-shot, but the visitors replied shortly before the break. Chalfont took the lead midway through the second half after hesitation in the Rover defence, but Fry scrambled a late equaliser to save Rover's unbeaten record.
Witney began their game against Harrow disastrously, going three goals down within ten minutes, and they were four down by the break.
Graham Mathews and keeper Jon Watkins battled hard and Brown grabbed an excellent consolation goal, but as a performance, it wasn't anywhere near good enough.
Simon Harrison scored all six goals as City 3rd beat City 4th in one of the Open leagues. Alex Durand got both for the 4ths.
