Land Rover has announced its new 2001 Freelander model range, featuring a V6 engine, a new turbo-diesel engine, a new automatic Steptronic transmission, and improvements throughout the range, writes David Duffy.
The company said the changes should further enhance the appeal of the Freelander, already Europe's best-selling 4x4.
They also enable the Freelander to be sold in more markets, including the USA, Japan and the Middle East, greatly boosting total Freelander production.
In all, 70 per cent of the flagship 2001 Freelander V6 is new or modified.
For the existing 1.8i engine version, 40 per cent of all components are new or modified.
The changes also include extensive chassis improvements and substantially higher trim and equipment levels across the range. The Freelander 2001 range extends that span in both directions. The new models are even more civilised and fun to drive on tarmac, as well as being easier to drive over difficult off-roading terrain that would defeat less authentic 4x4s. The Freelander 2001 range continues the successful formula of the three body types three-door Softback, three-door Hardback and five-door Station Wagon. Each format is available with any of the four powertrains.
To reflect the improved specifications, new trim level designations of 'S', 'GS' and 'ES' are used.
In the UK all three levels are offered on 1.8i petrol and Td4 diesel models, while 2.5-litre V6 models are available in GS and ES form.
All 2001 models have clear front direction indicators, integrating with the headlamps for greater visual width. The new trim level badging is positioned on each front wing. Td4 and V6 engine designation badging is on the taildoor. Freelander 2001 vehicles have revised styling.
The V6 versions are identifiable by the more strongly sculpted and extended front bumper and grille, with a castellated profile to the lower body colour section. The Freelander's new BMW-built and designed 2.0-litre Td4 diesel engine replaces the former L series unit and Land Rover says it offers significant gains in performance and refinement, and still better economy.
Also fitted are uprated braking, suspension and steering systems.
To meet the demands of the world's more extreme climates, all Freelander 2001 models have a newly developed, more powerful heating, and ventilating system.
The new ES trim level introduces a new level of luxury to the Freelander range, featuring new items such as heated seats, power-fold door mirrors, a six-disc CD autochanger and twin illuminated vanity mirrors, as well as leather trim, electric glass sunroof and 16-inch alloy wheels.
