Eat your heart out Laura Spence schoolmaster Ken Shearwood's description of the 1947 interview which gained him a place at Brasenose College, Oxford, with scanty academic qualifications even for those days, is indeed from another era. Special allowances were made for him as an early post-war ex-serviceman, and as an ex-pupil of public school Shrewsbury. He later learned that the dons realised that he knew no history, but his face reminded them of a boy who had been killed in the war. His memoirs include the story of his career as an uncompromising centre-half in the amateur soccer Pegasus side from Oxford and Cambridge, which twice won the Amateur FA Cup at Wembley. The book is available from 3 Valentine Close, Steyning Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5NR.
