Witney Tn 2, Spalding Utd 3
Witney gave Spalding a run for their money but it was not enough to take all three Dr Martens Eastern Division points on Saturday in a game that produced possibly the goal of the season, and probably the own goal of the season!
With only one win in in their last nine matches, the home side faced an uphill battle after going behind early on.
Spalding took the lead after just three minutes when Craig Wilson's cross was met by Nigel Vince, whose low shot went in off the post.
Kevin Willetts went close to a Witney reply before Spalding increased their lead on 22 minutes. Wilson was again involved, finding Dave Gilbert who scored with a low shot through a crowded area past the unsighted Tom King.
Witney pulled one back within minutes with a spectacular own goal. Richard Bourne's deep cross was met by Spalding defender Ian Wilkins, and his header flew past his own keeper.
But Spalding soon put that behind them and increased their lead when Jason Sedlan scored with a low shot.
Witney should have reduced the arrears by half-time, Jason Caffel's free kick hitting the crossbar, and Bourne's shot being cleared off the line.
Spalding always looked dangerous on the break and Henderson and Sedlan forced fine saves from King.
Just before the end, Willetts scored with a rocket of a shot from outside the area to give Witney hope, but it was not enough.
