This year's Carling Weekender is being rightly cited as one of the best festivals of all time, writes Templeton Blake.
Not only that, but it also marked the beginning of an upsurge in bands that are simply exhilarating to watch.
Among this year's many success stories is My Vitriol named after the contents of a gangster's pocket in Graham Greene's novel, Brighton Rock. They 'arrived' after performing just a handful of gigs and being snapped up by Infectious Records.
The band's mouthpiece, Seff, explains: "We were signed after only our seventh gig. Every single day since has been amazing. The year has flashed by. Last August Bank Holiday we were playing the Half Moon, Putney this year we were playing the main stage at Reading!" Along with fellow rising-stars King Adora, My Vitriol join Mansun on a tour which brings them to Oxford for the first time on Sunday.
"Oxford is one we are really looking forward to. I went to gigs at the Jericho Tavern a few years ago," Seff added. "I was last in Oxford to see Mercury Rev at Brookes."
My Vitriol's third single on the Infectious label, Pieces, is released the day after their Brookes date.
If their reputation for incendiary live performances is any guide, the local outlets will be needing to ensure they have the stock to cope with demand after Sunday night.
