Author Colin Dexter, who made Oxford the murder capital of Europe with the Inspector Morse series, was today receiving his OBE.
His award was announced in the Queen's Birthday Honours list in June and was being presented to him at Buckingham Palace.
After 14 novels, the body count stands at 81 and Mr Dexter, who lives in Banbury Road, Oxford, decided to kill off the difficult detective in his last book, The Remorseful Day.
Fans of the highly successful series will be able to see the very last episode on ITV next month.
