Gene therapy company Oxford Biomedica is to be the first in the UK to use new high-speed software for analysing the human genome, writes Maggie Hartford.

Oxford Biomedica, based at Oxford Science Park, will licence the GenoMax system, developed by Informax, based in Rockville, USA.

The two companies are also in talks about joint marketing of genetic information produced from Biomedica's gene-discovery programmes.

Biomedica, which is working to develop treatments for cancer, viral infections and neurodegenerative conditions, will keep control of the rights to the genes and any products derived from them.

Informax provides technology which can unravel the vast amount of data on genes, proteins and other biomolecules which has recently been released on the Internet, including the human genome project.

Oxford Biomedica has developed a system called Smartomics, which makes disease-related genes easier to identify.

Biomedica chief executive Prof Alan Kingsman said: "Informax has developed software tools that complement our existing gene-hunting capabilities."
