A new production of 42nd Street, one of the most famous backstage musicals of all time, will be staged at the Apollo Theatre this week. This is the story of the young unknown dancer Peggy Sawyer, who becomes an overnight star when leading lady Dorothy Brock breaks her ankle and she steps into the leading role. It includes such classics as Lullaby of Broadway, We're in the Money, Dames, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and 42nd Street itself. Ruth Madoc, best known for her performance as Gladys Pugh in the BBC TV series Hi De Hi will be playing Dorothy Brock. Her leading man Julian Marsh, will be played by James Smillie, known internationally as Dr Dan Marshall in the TV series Return to Eden.
